How can I transition from my preppy style to emo/scene without freaking out my parents?

I do not want a label but it is easier to say "Emo and Scene" than to explain what style I like. I love the music, the hair, the fashion but I have really conservative parents and they are afraid to let their baby (I'm the youngest) be different.
